Pride meets patriotism in Independence Week show

by Jeff Woodard

Columbus-What happens when gay pride meets patriotism the week of Independence Day in Ohio's capital city?

The Columbus Gay Men's Chorus' performances of "Over the Fruited Plain," a program of music embodying the American spirit that will serve as the Chorus's final tune-up for GALA Choruses Festival 2000 in San Jose later in the month.

"When you hear these men sing [the Ray Charles' rendition of] 'America the Beautiful,' you come away with a different feeling of pride as a gay person," says marketing director Terry Thompson. "We enjoy many freedoms as gays and lesbians in this country that some of our brothers and sisters don't have where they live. This is one concert that will positively move every one of your emotions."

Highlights of the July 7-8 shows include a medley of songs representing the four branches of the U.S. armed services, as well as a special appearance by "Kate Smith," singing her signature "God Bless America." The Cincinnati Men's Chorus will make a guest appearance, performing songs from its summer concert.

The largest of the Buckeye State's GALA choruses, with 130 members, Columbus Gay Men's Chorus is coming off its most successful concert in its ten-year history. "The Women We Love" drew back-to-back, near-

sellout crowds in the high-style confines of the 850-seat Southern Theatre.

Co-arranged by artistic director David Monseur and assistant director Tim Sarsany, the March 10-11 shows paid homage to female recording artists Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Bette Midler, Karen Carpenter, Petula Clark and Madonna.

Crowd pleasers include a high-energy performance of Tina Turner's "Proud Mary" that included a total re-creation of Turner's original choreography for the song; a mirrored disco ball illuminating the theater during "Last Dance"; and the pulsating strobelight effects to the music and movements of "Vogue."

Garland stole the show-via the magic of video technology-when she appeared on screen while the chorus sang "Cottage for Sale."

The Chorus will perform selections from "The Women We Love" this weekend (June 10-11) when it travels to the Queen City to participate in a joint concert with the Cincinnati Men's Chorus.

Growth for the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus continues to take on many forms, says Monseur, noting the significant increase in requests for the group to sing at a variety of functions in the Columbus community.

"We have experienced unforeseen requests from many, many church and religious organizations," he says, adding that he is planning to develop a small ensemble dedicated solely to performing "sacred literature."
